Temptation

By Bonnie Weatherman · Comments (0)
Satan is the leader in the temptation of mankind.  Now the serpent is more subtil than any beast of the field.  (Genesis 3:1) We must understand how Satan operates.  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.  (II Corinthians 2:11) We must be on guard against Satan’s evil work.  No one is exempt from his temptation.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  (I Peter 5:8) Satan will use anything possible to keep us bound in sin and away from God.  He will use the same tactics to keep Christians from being obedient and serving God.  Satan knows our weakness and will use that to lure us into sin.  The world offers three things which Satan uses to his advantage against us.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  (I John 2:16)

God’s Word offers encouragement to us in the midst of temptation.  Almighty God can even use Satan’s temptations to our benefit.  My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  (James 1:2-3)  If we yield to temptation, we are absolutely without excuse.  There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.  (I Corinthians 10:13)

God will always help us in temptation if we will allow Him to do so.  For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.  (Hebrews 2:18)  The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:  (II Peter 2:9)  The more submissive we are to God’s Will, the less Satan will bother us.  Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  (James 4:7)
God has promised a great reward for those who endure temptation.  Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried,  he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.  (James 1:12)  We must endure and resist temptation for the present time, but, praise God!, the time is coming when temptation will be no more!  To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.  (Revelation 3:21)

Remember

By Bonnie Weatherman · Comments (3)

All the many wonderful things God has promised us is based on and grounded in Who God is, What He has done in the past, and what we can count on Him to do in the future. All this has been revealed to us through the Holy Scriptures and through history. When we are threatened with fear or disbelief, we need to recall these things to our mind. In the Psalms, David often remembers something about God. His remembrances help him to gain victory over his enemies, his fears, his failures, and his depression over his circumstances.

David’s way out of all his circumstances was always the same: He remembers some special quality about God and some demonstration of that quality. Some of the things he remembers are His loving-kindness, His mercy, His forgiveness, His Word, His salvation, His faithfulness, His deliverance, His justice, His compassion, His love, His righteousness, His strength, His watchful eye, His presence, His blessing, His knowledge, and His protection.

As humans, we are prone to forget. We forget not just everyday things, but we also forget what God is capable of doing. However, before we can remember something, we must first know it. If we do not know Who God is, what He has done, and what He will do, there is no treasure of knowledge within us to recall when we need to draw strength from remembering. We live by faith, which the Apostle Paul describes as being the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1).

Many things challenge our faith, and, sometimes, our faith grows weak. When this happens, we must put our self in another place or time, into a different frame of mind, and remember that God has always loved us and has always been with us. God’s love and His presence are guaranteed promises regardless of what we may be facing. We can count on His faithfulness, even when we lose faith. God stays with us through it all because He wants us to love Him and stay with Him. We must stay focused on God.

Do whatever you can to remind yourself of God’s faithfulness: recite a verse, sing a song, recall an experience of your own or of someone else. If you must, resort to talking to yourself. David did! Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits (Psalm 103:1-2).

The Bible repeatedly warns us that we all will face a righteous judgment.  There is absolutely no escaping judgment.  We will be held accountable, either at the judgment seat of Christ as Christians or at the Great White Throne judgment as condemned sinners.  So then everyone of us shall give account of himself to God.  (Romans 4:12)

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.  (II Corinthians 5:10) The Bible repeatedly tells us to be prepared for this judgment.  Prepare to meet thy God.  (Amos 4:12) It is the Lord Jesus Christ Who will be our righteous Judge.  For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.  (John 5:22) I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doing.  (Jeremiah 17:10)

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.  (Hebrews 9:27) Will the excuses we offer to justify our half-hearted service to the Lord hold up in the day of judgment when we stand face to face with the Master to face the deeds we have or have not done?  Most likely, they will leave us standing there with head bowed low in shame.

Ashamed–that we have  not taken advantage of every opportunity we have to hear the Word preached and taught.  Ashamed–that we have not studied the Word in order to present our self a workman who needeth not to be ashamed.  Ashamed–that we have neglected to pray as we should.  Ashamed–that we have robbed God of our tithes and offerings.  Ashamed–that we have not witnessed for the One Who died for us.  Ashamed–that we have not lived a life worthy of our calling.  We must live so as not to face Him ashamed.

God is love

By Bonnie Weatherman · Comments (2)

God’s great love is expressed in the many benefits He freely provides us each day.  Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation.  Selah  (Psalm 68:19).  What a shame that most of us take these expressions of love for granted and seldom or never offer neither gratitude nor praise for them.  It was love that prompted God in eternity past to plan our salvation through the sacrifice of His Son.  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

It was love that made the Son be obedient to the Father’s will.  It was love that brought Christ down from heaven to this sin-cursed world.  It was love that stripped Christ of His heavenly honor, glory, and praise to come to this earth where he was poor, despised, and rejected.  It was love that moved Christ to prayer and tears for sinners.  It was love that brought Christ to bear the load of our sins.  It was love that made Christ endure beating and humiliating crucifixion to shed His precious blood for our sins, the sinless One dying for our sins.  It was love that caused Christ to send the Holy Spirit to comfort and help us when He returned to heaven.  It is His love for the church that will bring Him back for us at the appointed time, even though we have often miserably failed to love Him.  It is His love for us that will unite us to Him at the marriage supper of the Lamb.  It is His love that will keep us through all eternity.

God and Christ have set the supreme, perfect example of love for us.  Yet, multitudes have, to their own damnation, spurned the love so freely offered and refused to accept salvation.  Multitudes more who have embraced Christ still trod under foot His precious blood by the sinful practices we so often engage in and by the good things that we neglect to do.  Because we do not have the proper love for all three Persons of the Holy Trinity, we cannot possibly have the proper love for fellow Christians, much less the unsaved.

God has been very specific about the way we are to love.  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself  (Mt 22:37-39).  Imagine the bliss of a future time and place when we who are saved will no longer have our sin Nature and will indeed love God and others as God intended.

Love is the greatest of all Christian virtues.  And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity  (I Corinthians 13:13).  It also comes as no surprise that love is the first fruit mentioned in the list of the fruits of the Spirit.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law  (Galatians 5:22-23).

God is love  (I John 4:16).  Love always has and always will be an attribute of God.  God’s love will be the theme of our praise throughout eternity.  The chorus of a great hymn expresses this beautifully.  “O love of God, how rich and pure.  How measureless and strong.  It shall forevermore endure, the saint’s and angel’s song.”

Love should be our highest goal as a Christian.  Christ expects us to love others as He has loved us.  This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you  (John 15:12).  Christ sacrificed Himself for us.  Yet, most of us are not willing to make a personal sacrifice for those we claim to love, much less for the unlovable. The love we have for others and our expression of that love gives evidence that we are disciples of Christ.   By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.  (John 13:35).  Love makes us more like God.  Love is the test of true discipleship.  Love demonstrates the reality of our new life in Christ.

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.   He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.  (I John 3:14) It is impossible to love God without loving others.  If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen.  And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. (I John 4 20-21)

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering for a sweet-smelling savour,  (Ephesians 5:2) The love we have for God does not come from the natural man.  It is the soul’s response to the sacrifice of Christ when we become a Christian.  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  (I John 4:10) Love for God will automatically lead us to service.  He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?  He said unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.  He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.  (John 21:16)

Love is essential in the good works that we do.  If love is our motivation, God will be glorified through it all.  The wrong motive ruins a good work.  Whatever we do is as nothing if it is not done in love.  Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.  And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.  And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing  (I Corinthians 13:1-3).

We are so undeserving of the Love of God.   Yet, He loves us.  Lord, help us to love others as we should and not to judge them as unworthy of our love.
